It's so depressing.
This wonderful wonderful restaurant (on Greenpoint near 42nd St) just closed. I will miss their elotes asados-- grilled ears of corn slathered with mayonnaise and rolled in grated salty cheese. They had by far the best tacos in the area--the roasted pork in their pernil tacos was the perfect mix or crispy and moist-tender. They even made me a fan of tripe and brain tacos, which were always clean and fresh tasting. Their deeply warming pozole soup blessed many a cold winter evening. They were also one of the few places in the city where you could get a pambazo (sort of like a Mexican sloppy joe).
HLing happened to speak to the owner on the street a few days ago, and he expressed frustration that in spite of good writeups in Eric Asimov's NY Times column and a few other places, his business just never took off. He's considering opening a place somewhere in NJ.
