goodbye AIX

I read today in the Times that Aix is closing briefly for a makeover into a "casual" burger-type place called Brasserie Aix.

Aix has been a stalwart of reasonably sophisticated dining and drinking in a neighborhood otherwise DEVOID of same.

What I especially will miss is the front bar-cafe area which is (by NYC standards)a spacious combination of u-shaped bar and about a dozen tables. It offers a cafe menu AS WELL as the main dining room menu. It has been a convivial spot to meet friends and have drinks (albeit expensive ones) and first-rate food (I really like the scallop appetizer and the chicken main with star anise, mushroom medley and fingerlings... as well as, of course, the great bread).

Although I don't know for sure what the new incarnation will be, it seems, based on the Times squib, that the upper west side will have yet another middle brow dining choice. For those of us who want more...well, a cab ride downtown is $20.
