A thread on tamales in Fresno got me thinking about this. Years ago in Sacramento there was a little restaurant called Capital Tamale, and they served the finest tamales that I have ever had. In lieu of a big doughy ball of masa paste in the middle, they had thin layers of masa layered with corn husk. You had to methodically peel your tamale apart to get to the treasure in the middle, and it was wonderful. The sauce was house made, and they would give you an extra cup of it to gargle with if you asked for it. Truly, this place was a temple of gluttony.
Sadly, Capital Tamale has been gone for many years, and what passes for tamales locally are not in the same family of food. My question is, where, oh where, can one get good tamales like this in Sacramento? Or the greater Sacramento area? Or California, for that matter??
