Good restaurant for visiting foodies?

Hi-I will be there at the end of May for a sports medicine conference.

Several of my colleagues and I (who only get to see each other once a year or so) would like to go somewhere for dinner. We enjoy good food but this is not meant to be a gourmet gathering. Not super pricey, nice ambiance where we can chat for a while and have a relatively slow paced meal, not too loud or crazy, one of our members is vegetarian. I think close to the convention centre/Union Square/financial district would be preferable.

I'd really appreciate some ideas from the knowledgable members of this board. I'm a real foodie and have been to cooking school in France etc but most members of the group are not into this level of pursuit. But if anyone has any suggestions for a second place for myself on another night I'd appreciate that.......unfortunately my wife can't come so I'll likely be alone for that meal so please factor that into your opinion.

thanks again,
