Two Good Places for Cheap Lunch (Mission/SF & Telegraph/Berkeley)

Cyrus J. Farivar | Apr 15, 200411:00 PM

La Qunita on 24th/Mission is a great place to go to hang out and have a beer and a birria (goat soup), which David Boyk and I shared last weekend. Looking around the room, that seems like the thing to have there. It was warm, light, meaty, and tasty. My girlfriend Rachel got an enchilada, which wasn't all that impressive, but the tortillas were. They were rich, thick, and plentiful. Dab on some onions, cilantro, and salsa (which was also quite good) and you almost had a taco!

Slurp on Telegraph Ave. which is a relatively new (opened earlier this school year, I believe) addition to the Telegraph food scene, just down the block from Naan N'Curry. I ordered a Fiery Chicken Thai Noodle dish which was on the board (a daily special, perhaps? I was there yesterday) and asked for it to be as hot as they could make it. The girl running the counter asked me if I was sure that's what I wanted, and I said yes. When I got it it was a hearty portion of noodles and some veggies and lightly cooked chicken. The spice was present, but it didn't make me cry (that's my threshold of being really spicy). The girl came and checked on me at least twice while I was eating to make sure I was ok -- it was very good, though -- and only $5! They also had really good (and cheap!) watermelon and pineapple juice for $1, very much like an agua fresca.
