I have lived in Reno for around 7 months and have yet to have a decent pizza. There are many varieties of thin crust New York pizza and the wild variations of California pizza, but coming from Chicago, there is nothing even close to a Giardanos, Ginos' East, Malnatti's, Aurelios, or Connies. Please tell me there is at least one place in Reno who makes pizza like Chicago. I am ready to pay $60 just to have one Chicago pizza flown in (frozen). I am not a native of Chicago (from Dallas) but while going to school in Chicago, found the best food (and pizza) I ever had. I also miss Portillo's, DD coffee, and the awesome Italian beef sandwiches. But the lack of a good pizza is killing me. Any suggestions?
As a Chicago native and a resident of the Tahoe area for 6 years, I can tell you confidently "no" there is no good, Chicago style pizza in town. There is a place in Sacramento called Chicago Fire and the owners there have done their homework to produce a great Chicago style pizza. They even offer the option between the Lou Mal's or Giordano's style pizzas. You can order either.
There is a Portillos open on the west coast now but its about an 8 hr drive down in Buena Vista, LA area. I've heard rumors that the owner of CommRow wants to put in an Italian Beef place when they are fully open. Lets keep our fingers crossed!
Until then, we're pretty much forced to make the 2 hour drive to Sacramento or pay $40 for a frozen Giordanos. I'm proud to say I've done when I needed a fix.
Yes, absolutely right about chicago fire. He did a fantastic job. I used to live in Folsom and was so excited that he opened it up. I am also a native from chicago and have been so disappointed in the Pizza out her in the west. I now live here in reno and still havent been to any quality pizza places. I think I might open up a pizza place here in reno that would match a quality pizza like chicago fire pizza in Folsom, Ca. This place really needs some help! Let me know if there is any thing good out here in Reno! Please, im dying a slow death not eating any quality foods here in reno! I am also ready to get it shipped frozen from Giordano's
Quality food or quality pizza? The Reno food scene (outside of pizza) is truly outstanding as of late.
Thanks for the tip about Chicago Fire! I do drive to Palo Alto every so often and my wife and I also shop in Sacramento once in a while. Will make this a regular stop. You would think that Reno would be big enough to open at least one decent pizza place! People here think the cardboard that they eat is good pizza, but it is cheap, lousy and not even as good as the national pizza chains (which is pretty bad).
I'm with you on the Reno food scene. I am increasingly impressed. And I love Silver Peak Brewery pizza tho' it's not what OP is looking for.
I thought I had posted asking exactly what Chicago-style is but I guess I didn't. So I did a little research and now I know. Here's one that MIGHT fit the bill for you.
Yes, it's fair quality. You really need to get some authentic Chicago pizza to taste the difference. I appreciate the response though. I went to New Yalk, the other day and that was good pizza, w good ingredients, but still not like chicago by anymeans. So for now I will suffice to go the NEw Yalk pizza in the south part of Reno.
I'm a thin crust, small amounts of sauce and even toppings but enjoy :)
If you like thin crust and little sauce, then Chicago style would not appeal to you (it is just the opposite). Chicago style is thick crust, with an amazing, plentiful red sauce and generous amounts of expensive cheese. It is baked in a black (iron?) pan and has fairly traditional optional toppings (sausage, green pepper, onions, etc). There are some variations, depending on which Chicago pizzeria you go to. The first time I had a Gino's East pizza (in high school), I swear it was the best thing I had ever eaten. Very fattening and usually one or two slices will fill you up big time (not good to eat all of the time). Like Chicago Italian beef sandwiches, Portillo's hot dogs and Eli's cheese cake, Chicago pizza is some of the tastiest food in the world (but again, not very healthy). I hope one day you can have this slice of heaven- nothing quite like it.
U got that right!
I enjoy the fact that, in this huge nation, we have so many special cuisines. Some you gotta be born to :) I had to convert my husband to grits!!!
Oh, so sorry. I have lived here for 15 years and have found absolutely no comparison to good Chicago Pizza, NONE. I have considered having it shipped in from Lou Malnati's at a price, which can include Portillo's beef, over $100 for delivery, may do it with my next tax refund due to the culinary need!. There is nothing here and no one seems to know what it takes to make a greasy cheesy pizza in this sorry town. Guess you will have to have it shipped in as well, and I don't know how greasy it will be. Sorry for the bad news to you my friend, but it is what it is. Should you decide to move back, let me know and we can share the cost of the moving truck! :)

here are two links for you.
first one is for pizza from lou malnati's.
second one is for you to make it yourself. I have not tried the recipe but it sounds absolutely promising for italian beef.
Good luck my friend. If you no longer live here, I hope you are back in Chicago enjoying what I am not!:) Miss pizza and beef more than I can say. My favorite pizza was Rosati's in Mundelein with the "Cheef" Italian Beef Sandwich. Oh My. I will never have it again, as I will not make it back to Chicago area. So Sad. Good Luck to You.
