My CSA used to carry this pain de mie by Pastry Smart that was the perfect toasting bread. Thick cut, fine grained and delicate crumb, yet dense and firm enough to stand up to butter and jam being spread on it. However, a few months ago it disappeared, and I have been looking for a substitute. Supermarket sandwich breads are too coarse and bubbly, Japanese milk bread is too soft. The bakeries and upscale groceries I've checked have all sorts of artisan loaves but not a plain pullman pan pain de mie.
I've gotten desperate enough that I plan to stop by Acme in Berkeley this weekend, since I'm going up there this Sunday, but I'd really like to find a place in the south bay where I could pick a loaf up regularly. So does anyone have any suggestions? Suggestions in other areas will also be taken, but I'd really love anything in the South Bay.
