Good Masala Experience

Tonight I got take-out from Masala (61st street between Roosevelt & 39th Ave.) on the advice of Chowhound postings. It's worth a visit. It's not distinctive in the way that Mina's is when she's "on," but Masala does the standard Indian fare very well.

My order (for three people) consisted of: vegetable pakoras and shrimp poori as appetizers; both were very tasty and not greasy. Excellent main dishes were beef vindaloo, chicken tikka masala, shrimp tandoori and chana saag, with side orders of raitha and dal. The raitha was loaded with carrots and cucumbers and was a lovely, sweet complement to the food. The dal was outstanding, and hot. Because of my mom's constitution, I ordered the mains "mild" except for the vindaloo. This in no way compromised the depth of flavor of the dishes, which were well-spiced and complex (particularly the shrimp and chicken). We were also given an enormous quantity of rice, more than we could use. It was a lot of food for three people and there were plentiful leftovers. The total bill including tax was $60.00.

Great deal, great food! I'll be back.
