Best Georgian-Russian in Toronto?
Just opened. The woman chef/owner had a restaurant in Georgia, came to Canada and then had one for 12 years in Edmonton.
They were nice to me and gave me the Friday set lunch on Saturday. Two sauces, homemade bread, chopped vegetable salad (no lettuce, ripe tomatoes), harcho soup (not too harch), two smallish stuffed yellow peppers (beef). Generous, tasty, no salt problem, no Vegeta MSG, a woman's touch. Lunch showed enough to make me hypothesize that Pirosmani may be the best Georgian place in town. if you don't want your palate to be asalted and battered, I will return.
Niko Pirosmani is a now-famous Georgian primitivist painter who was a "starving artist" during his life. He is known for the romantic story, he sold everything he had and bought "a million" red roses which he spread in the courtyard of his one great love. Roses are fine, but better is wine. It didn't work. Pirosmani died alone, but his name lives on. Georgian restaurants all over the world have taken his name. Tell your date the story, maybe your date will feel sorry for him and will be nice to you.
P.S. I did return. The lunch main was something Georgian with beef and pork and potatoes. I passed because of the pork. They gave me something else instead, a veggie eggplant casserole. It was delicious.
The veggie cabbage borscht was pretty good but had nothing too ethnic.
I picked up the bowl and drank the light broth, then I ate the cabbage as a vegetable dish.
