Good Food at World Cafe Live

Went to the John Cale concert at the newly opened performance space at WCL last night -- associated with WXPN at 3025 Walnut St. What a surprise. Not only is it a great venue for a concert, but it is set up with a bar and table service for both food and drinks. Despite some opening week kinks with service (it took forever to get drinks), we had really good food. I had a tomato and fennel soup ($6) that was quite good and satisfying, along with a huge bowl of creamy panko-topped mac and cheese that had a hint of truffle oil ($5). What a great pairing, the portions of both were generous and more than enough for a full meal. My only complaint was that they served it together, so the M&C cooled off while I was eating my soup. Someone else had fried chicken with mashed potatoes and haricot verts ($16). Deelish! Another had a grilled Caesar salad ($9) which was also pronounced good. The menu had some fish items that sounded good, and several vegetarian options. Prices cover a wide range so you can spend as little or as much as you like. They have a full bar and a short list of fairly decent wines by the glass ($8-12) or bottle. The drinks are as expensive as they get in this town -- 2 - 12 year Macallans for $24! On the other hand, the fact that I got to sit down, eat good food and drink while watching a great show in a smoke-free venue was a real treat. It sort of felt felt like being at a dinner theater, but in a good way. Check it out. There is also a cafe upstairs with a free mike if you're not into paying for what's playing downstairs. A great addition to the neighborhood.
