So its that time of year again when chefs pretend they aren't at all interested in the GFG ratings.
The GFG is now national, and I don't really go to Sydney anymore so this will be a southern leaning edition.
In the three hats, Adelaide has finally got a three hat (again) with Orana. It's been on my list for a year or so but it seems to polarise people. No changes at the top in Vic, NSW Sixpenny is promoted (I think). Disappointing for Brisbane - Urbane has plummeted from three to zero due to loss of team at the top, and their only two hats are spinoffs of Southern restaurants.
Regional Victoria seems to have exploded this year, with squillions going into new builds on the Mornington Peninsula paying off with Point Leo coming straight in at two hats. Ishizuka also came in straight at two, but their eponymous chef walked a few weeks ago (I cancelled my reservation) so this might not reflect current conditions. Ike Jime, the rebadged fishy Bistro Vue, also comes in at two hats, as does Scott Pickett's new place in the Chanel handbag strip of South Yarra near the Botabic Gardens. It does look like the space suits him after the disappointing ESP.
Looking at the overall list, there is a nice mix of stayers and hot froth. For Victoria, it's pretty much on the nail - of course, some of the two and three hats charge the price of a small car so it's not necessarily a reflection of value. I was a bit disappointed to see Philippe fall of the hats list, though many of my regular eating places sit just outside the hatted territory.
If anyone knows the other states better than I do, please chip in. This thread and the link will help the occasional visitors.
