Saturday night we had our first ever meal at Spago. I really wanted to do the tasting menu but my companions weren't hungry enough to go for it.
Everyone liked their food (except for my husband who whined about the Original Veal Wienerschnitzel being too salty, but still managed to eat the whole thing). I started with a Jerusalem Artichoke Soup with shavings of truffle and cream which was great, and had leg of lamb with the tastest goat cheese ravoli. My husband had the frogs legs to start and the aforementioned Wienerschnitzel. Our friend started with the minestrone soup and had the lamb as a main as well. We had split an amazing Meyer Lemon Tart and the Kaiserschmarren for dessert, both were terrific (yes I know I've complete butchered the spelling on everything here).
The starters and the desserts were considerably better than the mains. This is something we've been discovering about fine dining experiences lately. We always say we should just order lots of apps and desserts and skip the mains but never do.
Anyway, the most disappointing part of the evening was the service. The waiter was aloof and inattentive, he never came back to see how we were enjoying any of our courses. I was really shocked because I've never heard anyone complain about service there. I do think sometimes we get less than attentive service because we do not order alcohol, and I suspect this was the case at Spago. My husband was very disappointed and I think I'm going to have a hard time convincing him to go back for the tasting menu that I still want to do. Maybe I'll need to hit it on my own for lunch sometime.
