Good eats in Saugerties

Hungry for adventure? | Dec 10, 2003 03:06 PM

Perhaps I may have missed it, but I often see postings from folks looking for eats in the Hudson Valley area, Kingston, Rhinebeck, Woodstock etc. Everyone seems to bs stuck on old Stand-bys, The Bear, New World Home Cooking, and lots of Rhinebeck...bla bla bla.

The Red onion, home to the worst meal I have EVER HAD and certainly the worst and most pretencious service I have ever experienced, is about as far OUT of Saugerties as you can get. Incidentally, it's right across the street from The Blue Mountain Bistro which is always a wonderful meal, lovely ambience and service. The Mediterranean Kitchen, which very recently opened in Saugerties has never yet received a mention to my knowledge, and the food is great, nor have any of the other new restaurants (less than a year).

I mention this because I am a NYC transplant, a Chef and restaurant owner in more than one area in the hudson valley and I eat out A LOT. Because of this I won't mention my own restaurants and could care less, but if anyone would like the heads up on some more original eating ideas around the Hudson Valley, feel free to email me. By the way...the best Falafel sandwich around, in my opinion, is at Garbriel's Cafe on John Street in Kingston along with lots of great organic, vegan, veggie and Latin lunches. How about the new Asian addition to Jean Jacques long block of restaurants next to La Carnard Enchaine in Kingston?

Get up here and out there, my colleagues and even some of my least favorite people are cooking some great food in the Hudson valley. Sorry to the Red Onion fans, maybe they have gotten their act together since then, I sure hope so.
