After the debacle at Guilin Garden, which I think may have closed, a friend recommended D & A Cafe on Clement St (btwn 5th & 6th Ave) for dinner . The place also serves up regular American fare and those tapioca drinks, so it doesn't appear from the outside that it serves authentic Cantonese food.
They have the usual lunch specials, but for dinner we chose the their special deal: $15.99 for 3 dishes including rice. While there are some places that may have lower prices, D & A gives some really large portions and it's high in quality as well. There are about 80 +/- dishes on the menu to choose from. The clientele was 95% Chinese so that is usually a good sign.
We selected the deep fried flounder, brisket of beef stew, and a dish of bok choy/black muchrooms. For desert we tried the fried bananas which tasted good but we too full to finish.
Overall, I wouldn't classify this as the best Chinese food I ever had, but it is reliable and I would definitely make a return visit.
