Good 1st date restaurant during weeknight?

Looking for something not overly expensive ($25-40 max. p/p) with great food {keeping in mind the early dating/dining code of conduct}, nothing overly intimate or fancy in the wrong-impressions dept. with regards to setting... you get the idea. I was thinking of maybe Liverpool House, but perhaps something a bit more casual and fun for a first date. I would do Kazu because of the close-seating and great food, but I wouldn't want to get stuck waiting in line for barstools. If it were warmer weather, I'd do the terrace at Leméac but without the outdoor seating, it seems a bit boring and formal for a first outing with a girl. I'm thinking of something like Da Emma maybe, but with a better menu? In fact, Italian is always a safe bet... just avoiding any stuffy oldschool dining rooms or anything overly fancy. Has anyone eaten at Da Emma lately? I was there earlier this summer for the first time at the newer location int he Village and they seem to have a really limited fixed menu of 2-3 basic staple dishes that they carried over from the old restaurant on St-Laurent. Anyways, it doesn't have to be Italian... Japanese would also be great if anyone can think of a good option. This is for Thursday night. I was even considering Tavern on The Square or maybe Rumi on Hutchison/Fairmount but I'd really prefer something a bit more casual and unique. Preferably Japanese or Italian!
