gom ba woo, alexandria va - my best find ever

howler | May 30, 2004 10:32 AM

i was in alexandria for just the weekend; on previous visits i had looked enviously at the treasures that were sprouting up along columbia pike - and this time i managed to sneak away for lunch.

i randomly ran into gom ba woo, a korean restaurant. (we had pulled into its parking lot to turn around!) i looked in the window - small space, but clean and cool with three korean ladies cooking in the kitchen, and was hooked. i KNEW this was going to be great.

what i didnt know was that this was going to be one of the eating experiences of my life. i got a dish of tripe and sliced beef, which you rolled into fresh lettuce along with unctuous pieces of meltingly tender fat, dipped in a sauce, man oh man, then the kimchee pork with tofu and some other dishes i had absolutely no idea but were all stunning.

this is food made with love, devotion and care. i have very, very seldom eaten like this. go NOW. i live in london, but will be back often.
