Golden Taste

I'm never really sure where to go for chinese food in chinatown since there are... well......so many chinese restaurants! The ones that I have been too (couldn't tell you their names) where definitely not memorable. This past weekend I had the opportunity to eat at a chinese restaurant called 'Golden Taste' (42 Bowery btw Canal and Bayard) which is worth noting. I had the privilege of eating there during the chinese new year festivities and also of having the restaurant owner recommend their best dishes. Sadly, because the owner recommended everything I have no idea what the dishes are actually called! So I'll do my best to describe the Hong Kong style chinese food at Golden Taste!

Our meal started out with a whole boiled crab served cold and with a sweet and sour sauce. Next we had some eel with a yummy black bean sauce. It was tasty without being too oily which happens with some eel. Then we had the 'house chicken'. The owner insisted that this is not an 'american-style' chicken! It was a chicken with very little fat! It was steamed (which scared me at first!) and was served with a tangy garlic and green onion dipping sauce. It in fact did have a very different flavor than 'american chicken'! Their fried rice was special because it had yellow and white strings of egg running throughout it....apparently the whites and yolks are separated before cooking which makes it a little more visually interesting than standard fried rice. There was a shrimp dish that combined crunchy, breaded shrimp, melon, pineapple, walnuts and cherry tomatoes with a mayonnaise-like sauce that seemed an odd combination at first but was actually enormously tasty! The highlight of the meal though was their mixed mushroom dish. It combined 3 different kinds of the most flavorful mushrooms and bitter melon in a mild garlic sauce. This is the restaurant's star dish!

So, as you can tell, I really enjoyed the food at Golden Taste! I'm not exactly sure what makes it 'Hong Kong' style but it was good (the owner said something about 'less gravy'!)! This place was a cut above the rest without a doubt!
