Goin' back to Cali---CHIBCHA revisited

CHIBCHA = Awesome Silverlake hole-in-the-wall serving up delicious Colombian grub.

Mrs. rabo and I stumbled upon this place some months back, and have been enjoying regular visits. On this occasion, however, we decide on ordering a couple of swarthy, untranslated menu items.

We start on familiar ground---empanadas. Light, corn-meal encrusted, some of the best in the city. Pass the fiery green salsa, por favor.

Then, after extensive consultation with both the waitress and, via cellphone, our Colombian in-laws, we order the following:

"Sobrebarriga en salsa"---which translates to, or so I am told, "top of the stomach with sauce". I love a menu that doesn't mince words.

Holy Escobar! Muy delicioso. A nice-sized hunk of brisket-y beef, which trembles and crumbles at the slightest nudging of my fork, doused in a tomato/onion/garlic-based sauce with strong curry overtones. Like a sexed-up, Shakira version of ropa vieja. Really, REALLY nice. Served with rice, yucca, and salad. Eight bucks, and bring your dental floss

"Ajiaco Santafereno"---Attention, soup-lovers. This stuff will make you swoon.

A large bowl of chicken soup---the meat, all white, torn into large chunks. Lots of reedy herbs floating around. Big bowl of lemons. Alongside, a humongous dollop of crema, and a pile of capers. Apply all accoutrements to your liking. Mix together, and experience the heavenly, heady brew of creamy-spicyness, of sour and salty punch, the collision between hearty meatiness and floral soupiness. Truly unique, singularly delicious, and soothing as all get out. Seven bucks for your one-way ticket to Bogota.

It must be stated that the joint is woefully understaffed, and service can be slower than the synapses in Bush's brain. Bring a little patience with you.

But really, we FARC-in' love this place.
