Been meaning and meaning to try the new Middle Eastern pastry place on Steinway betw. 28th ave. and Astoria Blvd. (that famous block). finally did it tonight and I am veritably blown away. I don't profess to be an expert in this kind of pastry - I often find it too wet, too sweet, and hard to eat more than several bites. The best seems to be moist, not wet, not glistening, and just the right level of sweetness - which is still quite sweet as desserts go, but not overboard. I've found Ali's desserts at Kabab to be just right, although I often encounter them after having stuffed myself silly with his other wonderful offerings. The stuff at Lazia's is AS GOOD as Ali's, and much more varied. The best thing were the greenish, minty pistachio squares in the window - to die for. Baklava also was great, flakey and not at all soppy. And the sesame-date cookie things were richer and more complex than they appeared, and chewy to just the right degree. Also, the guy behind the counter was extremely friendly in a laid back way.
So yahoo. After one visit I would actually call this place worth a minor (or even major) trek. Of course I live around the block, so I'll be back often!
