Gluten Free Chinese in Bucks (Newtown)

A gluten aware chinese restaurant is finally here. Until now all I've found in the area was PF Changs. Today we discovered Lotus Garden.

Lotus Garden on S. Eagle Rd in Newtown is a gluten aware Chinese & Sushi take-out joint with some other asian dishes thrown in. I'd rate this place about average for take-out food, but the real treat is the owner Sam is gluten aware. He went over the menu with us and circled all the gluten free items for us. About 1/2 of the soups and appetizers are normally prepared gluten free, and he uses rice noodles for his chow fun and mei fun so most of those are GF. In addition to the items normally prepared GF he is willing to specially prepare many of the other dishes on his menu GF!

Some of the GF already on his menu include:
Wintermelon and crab soup
Saigon shrimp wraps
Pad Thai
Singapore Mei Fun
Chow Keow Teow)

The rest have to be made special, but that seems to be at almost 50% of the Chinese menu. He prefers you to call ahead for special GF items since they are done from scratch per order, and he is willing to GF such sorely missed items as fried rice and (my favorite) General Tsao's Chicken. He is also willing to accommodate other food issues like sodium, low fat, and some allergies (he has potato starch). Special GF orders will take about 25 minutes maybe longer if busy. They do have GF soy sauce for the kitchen as well as take out packets.
We'll be eating out a lot in the next few weeks! I really miss chinese.

Sushi at Lotus Garden is VERY fresh and tasty and so is the seaweed salad. There is plenty of wasabi and ginger served with it. Be aware that the wasabi is the cheaper version and has some regular horseradish powder mixed in and also he uses straight spicy sauce on the spicy tuna rolls instead of mixing it with mayo like most places.

The prices are very reasonable 6-9$ for most Chinese dishes in large take out size and 5-6$ for most of the maki rolls.
