I finally got around to checking out Pie in the Sky on Center St. in Berkeley this weekend. I had walked by it without seeing it a number of times (the owner says he's going to get better signs and lights). Fellow Chowhounds had recommended it in response to a posting of mine in which I praised Gioia's pizza. Some had criticized Gioia's crust. After trying both versions I have to say that Pie in the Sky's crust is decidedly better than Gioia's - crispier, less bready, and more flavorful (Gioia needs to put a little more salt in the dough for starters). However, Gioia's toppings decisively beat Pie in the Sky's, in terms of both quality and variety. Call me a curmudgeon but I just don't think eggplant belongs on a pizza. So my verdict is that neither place has the Holy Grail of pizza yet, but they're both really close and it's great to have them both in my hometown. I particularly urge y'all to patronize Pie in the Sky - they're not getting the kind of business they should. Now on to Lanesplitter's and Pizzaiola!
