GIO (Gelato Italiano Originale) opened about six months ago on Union Street. With its own pasteurizer, GIO is making gelato from scratch using Clover milk and traditional recipes. Sorbetti are vegan without milk or egg whites.

Friendly owner and staff here allowed me to sample seven flavors. I cut myself off, maybe they would have let me keep going. I tried Seven tastes — cantaloupe, passion fruit, yellow peach sorbetti, then cherry chip, and the three I ordered, pistachio, white peach sorbetto and Portuguese milk & caramelized fig. Portuguese milk was a new term for me, and I learned that it refers to the Italian name for creme caramel, latte alla portoghese http://bergamogourmet.blogspot.com/20... . I found the fruit flavored sorbetti particularly good here, perhaps a bit too fluffy, but very direct and intense in flavor with well-balanced sweetness.

I was excited to see the display of bonbons and tartufi. Can't wait to return to try those.
