anyone else been to Gio on Chicago ave in Evanston yet? It's an Italian place by the same people who own Tapas Barcelona. It continues the trend in Evanston of opening restaurants of similar ethnic derivation in the same block as existing ones (like the two Indian places on Church between Chicago and Orrington and the two Middle Eastern places on Davis between Chicago and Orrington). This one is in the same block as Dave's Italian Kitchen, though they serve different types of Italian. Dave's is more of the "Italian American pasta in red sauce" and Gio strives for a more upscale Northern Italian type of experience.
A friend of mine found it very good, and thought it was striving for high end dining - though his friend found the server without humor. A different friend and I went and thought that the flavors in the things we had just didn't mesh (flavorless salad dressings, too-mild goat cheese on a salad with too much fried pancetta, mussels that completely overwhelmed the flavor of the broth they were in) and our server was really not good, spending 20 minutes chatting with friends at another table. I actually had to get up and go interrupt to ask her to bring us the bread we had asked for 20 minutes before.
We each stayed under $20 (including tax and tip) by having only appetizers, and their wine list looked reasonable, though we didn't have anything but water.
I see no need to go back.
