New Giant on Arlington Rd. in Bethesda

DanM | Dec 21, 200212:54 PM     5

The new Giant supermarket opened across the street from the old one on Arlington Rd. in Bethesda last week. While this new store is far, far from attaining the status of a great supermarket, it is an improvement both over the old Giant and its nearest competitor, the Safeway on Old Georgetown Rd. Let me give some credit where credit is due: the store has some interesting items I don't normally see in grocery stores around here, including Chinese longbeans (and a generally decent produce section). I also saw creme freche, and Devonshire cream. Someone told me they had good European style bread, but I didn't see it when I went late at night the other day...could be a morning thing. Areas for improvement: boring and not all that fresh-looking seafood selection, and the deli. Why can't supermarkets around here sell good European cured meats? Even if the turnover isn't all that quick, these items have a long shelf life!
