Giang Nan Chinese New Year dinner review

Just came back from Giang Nan in Monterey Park.

Appetizers:

Duck with special sauce - very tasty.

Celery with Jelly fish - only a few jellyfish pieces available, mainly a celery cold appetizer- refined and subtle dish, outstanding execution.

ZhenJiang Pork - it was the jellied pork fat, pretty good, but cholesterol laden.

Drunken Chicken - good portions, but just o.k.

Entrees:

House Special Soup with salted pork and bamboo shoots,
this was served in a huge claypot. the broth was great, they also put in the special noodle knots. the salted pork was a bit greasy.

Leek with eel paste: traditional shanghainese dish, very good.

XLB - decent, but Mei Long Village and Jin Jian are better.

House special Pork Pump - just o.k. the meat was not as tender as Green Village, but still a crowd pleaser.

Shanghai rice cake stirfry: not as tasty as I had hoped. Maybe the new year business overwhelmed the chef.

Dessert:

Wine with sesame rice ball and dates soup: outstanding, you can barely taste the wine. the rice balls were so tasty.

Overall impression:

For Shanghainese food, it's a decent joint. Some hounds swear by it.

I think Green village, Mei Long Village, JZ in San Gabriel rank higher than this place.

P.S. It was a mob scene. People with no reservations
were turned away. people who were eating were told to hurry up so the next group of people can sit down.
