Folks, I've searched this board and can't find a thread on how to make real German chocolate cake. Let's start with the icing. Not the gooey sweetened condensed milk and brown sugar with pecans and coconut stirred in. The one the slightly crazed friend of my parents used to make. It's home made caramel sauce with the pecan and coconut spread on top, and the cake gets run under the broiler for toasting. Of course it goes on a made from scratch cake (not a mix!) and the filling between the layers is chocolate cream. The friend would get up early to start it and it took all day. Despite that my parents' friend was my high school math teacher and that after I went away to college I heard he was arrested for shooting his neighbors dogs, I remember his German chocolate cake as a work of culinary perfection.
Any direction for the real thing?
