Genesee Depot/Katerina’s—Report

Sharona Rae | Mar 19, 2004 12:19 PM

Last Saturday, March 13, I made a reservation online for Genesee Depot(GD). We were meeting two out-of-towners and wanted a low key dinner place and a small, not-very crowded music place with dessert and coffee. GD is BYOB which is a bonus, considering the amount we spent on martini’s at Katerina’s later.

Even though two guests of the four hadn’t arrived, they seated us. I was surprised, but no one asked where the other two were. The restaurant was essentially empty at 7:30, so I was relieved and figured there would be no pressure about the other two being late for the reservation. We got a little pressure from the server, since he came back several times before the meal repeating that they hadn’t arrived yet. The busboy(I hate that word) opened our wine right away and put the white wine on ice for us.

After the rest of the party arrived we enjoyed looking over the menu and I recommended some things that Chowhound’s had recommended(prime rib, pierogi). I find the menu homey and very appealing. It’s not healthy or lite. Everyone was pleased with their dinner. The prime rib was superbly done with requested temperature. Brisket was delicious as always and my dinner of chicken breast stuffed with a dried cherry stuffing was perfect and delicious. All sides complimented the dinners from pierogi to cabbage. I myself find the pierogi entrée grossly overpriced. No one should pay ten dollars for 6 pierogi, no matter how good they are(I’m Polish and very frugal).

Thankfully the food was stellar since the service was not. Our waiter was preoccupied with a party of twelve next to us and several other tables. One server should be taking care of a table of twelve. It was ridiculous. He didn’t even have to bring us drinks, but he NEVER stopped and kept walking past us to the table of twelve. When he finally did come by it had been twenty minutes since we had finished. He asked if we wanted dessert and everyone said NO unanimously. He came back with the check and apologized for ignoring us. He said when people usually ask for the check right away, something must be wrong.

Yes the décor is oudated, but it is like having dinner at your mom or grandma’s house and the cooking there is usually pretty good. You certainly don’t go to their for the décor. I hope the service improves. Anyone else have trouble with their service?

Finally, we went to Katerina’s! What a treat….good music, yummy desserts and well done martini’s. Again, service was lacking and we had to wait a long period to be acknowledged for drinks and dessert. The chocolate zucchini cake was warm, moist and gooey with chocolate. The pear custard was sublime. All desserts are made in house.
The martini’s were pricey, but ohsogood. I recommend the sour cherry and the chocolate.

No disappointment on the food at these two establishments, just the service. It’s too bad, really.
