Using new generation ingredients with 50 + year old recipes

After many years of searching; I finally located a relative who had my grandmother's recipe for sour cream choc late was one of the loves of my life.!!! When I received the recipe though...they were calling it buttermilk /sour cream choc cake....yet there was no call for sour cream in the that possible? Did they just use one or the other pretty much to have the same effect in the cake 50-75 yrs ago? Please help....I am to scared to attempt to make it worried I might fail....I remember a jug that sat taped up for a couple days before mom made the cake....but that's not buttermilk.. thank you!!!! Worried and confused in Montana. ..
