Though yesterday's afternoon temperature didn't crack 70 degrees, a sidewalk table in the sun, protected from the breeze was a pleasasnt spot to enjoy some ice cream ending a day of errands in the City. Verjus has small tables outside to linger over plates of charcuterie, cheeses and tartines with a glass of wine. Breads are baked in-house. I spotted the Coppa di testa at another table and I'm definitely returning to order it.
This time though I only had eyes for gelato, housemade by Cotogna's pastry chef, Jenny Felton. She was on hand to scoop my order ... mint stracciatella gelato (2 scoops) with homemade cone, $6 including service charge. Verjus has devised a contactless ice cream service, transferring the cone to me in a wooden tray holder along with disposable utensils and a napkin.
The gelato was a lighter, refreshing style with clean and true mint flavor and thin crisp shards of dark chocolate that melted away on the tongue. That cone's a wonder of the world with so much lightness and air captured in the crunchy body. Plus it was pinched at the bottom to seal the tip for no drips, a common hazard of handmade cones.
I took home a cannele for later. Very good flavor ... vanilla, eggs, rum ... nice custardy interior though the crust could be a bit crunchier. I'd get this again.
The Financial District was deserted. So much street parking right by the Transamerica pyramid.
