Went to Gargoyle's on Saturday night and had a great time. It had been awhile since I'd been - I used to go every couple weeks when I lived in the neighborhood and always had great meals and service. But then there were a couple of great meals and poor service nights that turned us off for a while. We decided to give it another shot this weekend, if only for the fabulous sangria they serve in too-tall glasses, complete with bendy straw and paper umbrella. They look a bit out of place in this Davis Sq-sophisticated, quietly hip place, but fun for sure. So. We sat in the bar area to keep things casual, and wound up ordering apps only. Here's what we got:
RI-style crispy calamari - Vinegary, peppery, crunchy. Exactly what you'd expect and what you'd want when you order this dish.
Apricot and goat cheese turnover - Flaky pastry that could have been a bit more buttery, but the filling was great.
Tuna sashimi - Excellent. We actually wound up ordering seconds of this one. Great tuna, roe, and wasabi sauce, all atop a fried rice noodle cake.
Chili grilled shrimp - This was my favorite. The shrimp was perfect and the seasoning was salty and slightly spicy. Came with an avocado and cilantro salad, and two corncakes - sweet and delicious little fried patties full of chunks of corn.
5 apps plus 2 huge sangrias = $63 plus tip. Not exactly cheap, and the portions are on the small side, but we walked away happy. And the service was excellent, by the way.
