Normally, I hold these guys in high regard for their winning smiles, and "gangster" roast beef sandwiches. I realize this is going to sound really petty, and I apoligize in advance.
Yesterday, I was in the 3rd Av. Location, and requested some pancetta. When I received it, it was cut into 1/4" slabs. I realized I should have specified "thinly sliced," but every other place in the country I have ever purchased this meat will slice it this way unless specified (this is how I was trained to do it when I sliced meat for a living). So, I went back and requested an additional portion (rather than a replacement). This time, I did specify "thinly sliced, please." The guy proceeded to tell me he couldn't do it this way with the pancetta. Confused, I asked, "Well, uh, do you have any you CAN slice this way?" Again, he insisted you couldn't cut it this way. He then sliced a sample, and said "See? It falls apart." Back at him, I replied, "That's exactly how I want it."
I think this just annyoed me because he made such a loud "to-do" in front of the other customers, as if I were crazy.
