Took a shorter road trip yesterday.
I have taken 3 other road trips this season and had “family style” Fried Chicken meals.. Gallagher’s was the BEST place we have gone too, as well as the shortest drive. I plan on making this a regular stop.
Started off with a nice, tall, cold Smithwick’s. I was pleasantly surprised at their beer selection having Guiness, Harps and Smithwick’s signs in the window.
The beer was really fantastic. I am not a huge beer drinker. This was perfectly chilled and just really tasted great and I loved the unusual tall glass.
Next came some home-made biscuits with some nice soft butter. These tasted great. I actually had them after the meal as I wanted to save room for the main course.
The chicken was fantastic. Very crisp on the outside, yet even the breast was still juicy on the inside. Not a “battery” type crust but a crisp flour (maybe cornstarch also) crust. I was a bit floored by how juicy it was and crisp still on the outside.
I inquired whether they had a pressure cooker. No, just a large deep fryer. I don’t believe it was brined as I did not detect any of the saltiness that you usually have with brined.
The sides were a Corn Custard type dish, mashed potatoes, green beans with chunks of ham, and gravy.
The corn was great. Potatoes needed a tad of salt and pepper and they were really good. Green beans lacked some flavor. They did not really pick up the pork flavor and seemed to lack seasoning. But they were enjoyable just the same.
Finished it off with a chocolate caramel type cake/desert.
We LOVED this place. We will be going here regularly. It was about a 45 minute drive from West County.
I want to try their burgers. Specifically the Mushroom and Brie, and the “Popeye” burger with cheese and spinach. Their menu looks great.
Sunday though is ONLY Fried Chicken.
