Fuzzy Cloves?

Hi. I was trying to make a batch of pho soup. I placed some cloves in the broiler only to find that after a few minutes, a mold-like substance covered the cloves. In the container, the cloves looked fine. Is this a normal reaction, or were my cloves tainted with mold spores?
