My initial baptism of the Cantonese cuisine at this new Richmond Hill hot-table was so impressive, it led me to a fairly quick re-visit. Though less spectacular than the first time, my second dining experience was still pretty enjoyable, despite the inclusion of a couple of disappointing dishes in the mix.
Today, I finally had a chance to savor their Dim Sum menu offering. An area where Yelp and Tripadvisor bloggers were all raving about. Making a reservation outside of the supposedly packed, designated 'early-bird' period, the restaurant was still crammed with waiting patrons, when we arrived at 12.30pm.
Our party of 7 ordered a whole range of steamed, baked and fried tapas size dishes. In addition, we also added a couple of noodle and rice vermicelli casseroles for sharing.
Apart from a few nicely done dishes ( Fresh baked BBQ pork buns, Lotus leave wrapped sticky rice and Spicy Dan-Dan Noodles ) the rest of the products were mostly un-inspiring ( BBQ pork puff, Fried Squid tentacles, Seafood pancake crepe ), under-seasoned ( Har-Gow and Beef tendons ), sub-parley crafted ( Fresh fruit and cream Napoleon cake ) and in some instances, possessing unappealing textural feel ( Thousand layer dessert sponge cake ). Sadly, the use of fancy and gimmicky, square shaped steamers was totally impotent in enhancing the ordinary and so-so taste profile of the food! Unfortunately, based on the busy traffic flow of this restaurant, there are still quite a lot of naive supporters who are tricked into believing that there is a direct correlation between appearance and taste?!
To cap off this disappointing luncheon experience, I was unbelievably thirsty after the meal. A sensation which I have not experienced for a long, long while. IMO, a definite sign that excessive MSG were used in the seasoning of things!
If these are some of the best products our city have to offer?! Then I think I will take a break in risking and wasting my time, money and health in having any more inconsistent Dim Sum lunches in Toronto.
Oh! Yelpers' ratings are once again, out-of-whack! :D
