I went to Japan last winter using the advice on these boards and had wonderful meals.
Now hoping for some advice for this year's trip that will be 12/25-1/2. For others eating in Tokyo over the new year, I thought I would mention that eating sushi during the last week of the year is not impossible. My hotel reserved Sushi Iwa for me on 1/1, but I declined because it is a JPY30,000 special New Year menu, a little expensive.
My main question is to see if there are any other special Christmas or New Year period menus and foods at fancy or casual restaurants that you know of? I like seasonal specialties and novelty things very much. Secondly, any advice on sushi dinners that may still be available to reserve at?
My planning is a bit last minute, and my reservations were hit/miss, i.e. these were not my top choices but should be interesting anyways, right?:
-lunch at Jiro Roppongi for my husband's birthday
-dinner at Nodaiwa (I have never had a real unaju meal so I would like to try)
-dinner at Sushi Ko Honten (Can someone please advise if this is wise or not? This sounds like a place hotels send people to.)
My favorite meals last winter were lunch at Sushi Taichi and lunch at Kondo. Maybe I will try to just go back?
Thank you for any comments!
I am staying in Shibuya and plan to eat a wide sampling of ramen as well, and I enjoy kaiten sushi, okonomiyaki, and yakitori too if you have favorites. Is birdland worth going to?
