I tried this place based on Chowhound recomendations last night. I was extremely pleased.
The original thread posted about the home made noodles and talked about a lunch special where you could get either soba or udon then pick an additional item from a list. You can get it as a dinner special and i think its 2 or 3 dollars more at dinner. They had tempura, a tuna mayanoise mixture, and some other things. I choose te tempura.
First of all, the decor is really cool in here and very striking. Polishied concrete floors, lots of blonde wood. Very contemporary. Very japanese modern minimalist. Its visually very nice just to look around. On a side note, My wife said in the womens restroom there is a toilet that has a million controls on it and is heated for you.
The noodles came out first. I had the udon. You get to choose you topping (tempura flakes or "moutain vegetables"). The mountain vegetable were all things I didnt recognize so I got the tempura topping. The presentation is pretty simple. The udon doesnt have a lot of stuff going on. The noodles were awesome. Delicate with subtle flavors. Excellent, light broth, but full of flavors. A little spinach and green onion added texture.
My wife is the one that scored though. The cold soba noodles were out of this world. You can not get texture and taste like that unless you make them from scratch.
The tempura was pretty good. Its served over rice and they drizzle the sauce over it instead of you dipping it. The rice is a very good rice and you have your choice of white or brown. I prefer the sauce sperate because toward the end their was too much sauce over the rice and it became over powering.
But a very cool experience. Thanks Chowhounds!
