One of the delightful finds of my January mini-vacation in SLO was spotting Fromagerie Sophie. I stopped in that first afternoon to scope things out and then returned on my way out of town to make my purchases.
I had a nice chat with the owner the first go-round. The shop has been here for a couple years now. It's particularly strong in Alpine cheeses and blues, and also features local producers of fine cheese and charcuterie. There's a strong education bent and I regretted that I could not take part in one of the tastings.
This was my chance to taste a couple of California sheep milk cheeses from Rinconada Dairy in Santa Margarita that I'd read about: La Panza Gold and Pozo Tomme. However, neither appealed to me. I wound up buying duck liver mousse, Heublumen from Switzerland and French Gratte-Paille. The latter is said to be Lauren Bacall's favorite cheese and is not easy to find in San Francisco, so I considered it a definite score.
