As an avid gourmand, one of the harshest punishments this protracted Pandemic lock-down managed to inflict on me was the deprivation of sit-down, fine dining experiences at some of my favorite restaurants. As such, it was God-send and music to my ears when ‘re-opening’ news pertaining to my most beloved GTA ‘tasting menu’ culinary destination – FRILU reached me!
Using all the charms, influence and luck I could mustered, I managed to secure an extremely coveted, table for 4 on a holiday long-weekend! Arriving at the restaurant for an early 5.30 pm first sitting, it was so nice seeing familiar and friendly faces again. As well, it was a delight exchanging updates and pleasantries with both their smiling, front and back-of-house staffs (though the smiles were hidden behind masks! Ha!)
After such a long hiatus, I’m glad to report the talented kitchen team did NOT miss a beat!! The lovingly executed and artfully plated, ‘ Nordic cuisine with Asian/Japanese twist ‘ menu was as creative, capricious and delicious as before........especially those amazing array of wonderful tasting sauces!!
The menu for this evening’s ‘Omakase‘ meal is as follows:
Chef's Tasting – Summer 2021 $140
Bread & Butter
Fried sweetbread, spruce salt & Crispy Polenta, raw beef sashimi, green onion
B.C. Spot Prawn
Beef consomme, salted radish, BC Sturgeon Caviar

Chicken fat & egg yolk Hollandaise, Bread miso

Asparagus, Kombu, Bonito, Saffron cream
Linton Pasture Pork
Salted plum, Dandelion pesto

Once again, as in the past, our meal was near flawless and delectable. The resulting pleasurable ‘total-package’ experience left us all happy and contented! Even the intermittent rain drops that became an optional condiment to some of our dishes were not enough to spoil our memorable occasion!
Suffice to say, if you usually like eating at FRILU, based on tonight’s wonderful food preparation, I know you'll love this new menu. And if you haven't been before... well, this is a great time to support this local gem and give it a try!
