fried porky goodness, cafeteria de pancho - logan sq

"you eat pork right?"

are waitress asked us at cafeteria de pancho a cuban/puerto rican spot yesterday at lunch. I'm glad we did cause they have some good pork.

some of the pork we tried:

chuletas o maduros (pork chops and sweet plaintains) the crispy bits were especially good

yellow rice, black beans, and "carne fritas" - the black beans were a very nice and the carnes fritas were like generous fatty crackly pieces of chicharron.

lechon sandwich, good not quite as juicy as san juan bakery

mofongo (with pork skin) was greatly improved with the garlicky tomatoey broth to apply to it, you may have to remember to ask for it

Alcapurria (sp?) a kinda oblong ball of mashed plaintains filled with ground meat and fried - very tasty. This was the first one i had, do folks have other ecommendations for these?

we also had the octopus mentioned in the thread below.

a couple of tips - if you don't see hot sauce on your table there's a supply in the corner of the inner room (tapatio and the green version of yucateco-habanero) along side a bowl of jalapeno/giardinara. I'm not really sure on the etiquette of grabbing some of that but I did and it was pretty tasty.

It's a pleasant, no real-atmosphere neighborhood place, not making real efforts to draw folks in outside of their core clientele. Not especially welcoming, but not unfriendly either.

In the middle of our pork frenzy we noticed that they had cabrito borracho(drunken goat) on the weekends - anyone had that?

also the tamarindo batida was very good. mamey and mango were ok
