Best Fried Ipswich Clams (w/ the bellies -- NOT STRIPS!)

A transplanted New Englander (and a direct descendent of the Woodman who invented the damn things!) I've found precious few places that serve them, let alone do them well. The Docks on the UWS used to be great, but a new chef (as of last Spring anyway) has changed the batter and ruined them -- way too salty; I sent them back and have not returned.

The Docks mid-town East inexplicably serves them beneath a metal cover, so any crispness steams away en route to the table (and I understand that they, too, have adopted the awful new batter).

"fresh" in Tribeca makes an attempt (and, upon learning of my lineage, the owner generously comped them) but they only appear as an appetizer and are simply dredged in cornmeal, whereas the real McCoy (or "the real Woodman") has GOT to be in batter.

There's a sea side shack in New London that does them to perfection, but I just don't get to CT often enough. Any help? Thanks!
