Fried clams on Cape Ann

Chris VR | May 28, 2005 10:27 PM

We headed up to clam territory today. I was worried that the red tide would put the kibosh on our plans, but although prices were a bit higher, the clams were fine.

We went to Essex Seafood for the first time. Clams were expertly fried, bellies were too small though. Maybe I could have asked for big bellies. Tartar sauce was particualrly good. My usual favorite is Clam Box, and these were about as good. French fries tasted fresh made, very potatoey. Onion rings were also fried perfectly. The lobster roll was on the small side, but almost 100% lobster- not much in the way of filler. Wish the roll had been toasted though. Chicken fingers were fine, and a good deal for the price.

It wasn't very busy today, which meant no wait at around 5:45. We drove by Woodmans, didn't see a line. Farnham's had lots of cars outside. Clam Box had a huge line around 6:45 or so.

Stopped at White Farms for some really good ice cream. Someone here mentioned (I thought) that they got their ice cream from Richardson's, but I don't think so, unless they've renamed the flavors. I can always tell when someone had Richardson's because of the same set of flavors.
