fried artichokes

I was thinking of pulling all the leaves off and deep frying them...if you do so, can you can eat the whole artichoke leaf (even the whole leaf that comes from the outer part of the artichoke)? If so, it would make a quick and easy dish when I'm tired of french fries. How long should they fry? Should they be boiled first?
