In the course of a Christmas phone call I was reminiscing with my brother about the peanuts in the shell that we used to get at Gleason's Specialty Foods in downtown Saint Paul, which were roasted on the premises. It would be worth flying home and braving the snow to pick some up, but Gleason's no longer exists, alas.
It made me realize I've never encountered really good peanuts in the shell anywhere else. I tried the ones in the bulk bins at Berkeley Bowl once, and couldn't discern that they were any better than the ones in plastic bags from Safeway.
It's still some time before April and baseball season. when my need for peanuts becomes chronic, but I would be grateful for any clues --
