Fresh yeast vs. dried--any difference?

I recently came across a white-bread recipe that implied that fresh yeast would be much better to use than dried.

Now I know that some yeast makes better bread than others, and it may be that those that come fresh tend to be better.

But is there anything inherently better about fresh?
