As someone shared, she does not use lard in her tamales. She uses soy bean oil.
I ended up buying pork and chicken tamales from La Palma-- they're fresh but large for my taste and less filling/ to masa proportion than I prefer. However, I still enjoy them and I like the sauce they service it with.
For vegetarian, I ordered tamales from Tacubaya. Definitely more expensive but my guests really enjoyed them: thin, butternut squash in the masa, filled w/ black beans and avocado leaf served w/ crema and a salsa they gave me. They're wrapped in banana leaf. For large orders (a dozen), they need advance notice.
