When I exited Grocery Outlet this afternoon around 4pm, I made eye contact with a woman standing outside the door who then said, "Tamales". She had a shopping cart filled with a big pot swaddled with bedspreads. I asked what kind she had and how much. She makes pork and also cheese with jalapeno pepper. They're a buck apiece or $10/dozen. I bought 2 pork and one cheese to try. When I asked what days she can be found here, she just said, "Mañana", which would be tomorrow or Wednesday. I don't speak much Spanish and she didn't speak any English to me.
They were still warm when we got them home, and we steamed them for a short time just to bring up the temperature a bit. The masa had the texture of freshly made. The pork ones had a more supple texture from lard; whereas the cheese tamal had firmer masa and a saltier taste. We liked both and would buy them again if we spot her. They benefited from addition of a spoonful of our own salsa.
