Fresh Rambutans?

Greg | Feb 15, 2004 11:09 PM

Hi all!-

A couple of years ago, while visiting Thailand, I was introduced to the Rambutan, a mild lychee nut type of fruit with a truly bizzare appearance. (It looked more like an animal than a fruit... A kind of sea urchin.) For a reference, see: http://www.globalgourmet.com/food/spe...

According to this article: http://www.downtownexpress.com/de_26/... , while the fresh mangosteen is not (yet) legal for import, the rambutan is. Has anyone seen fresh rambutans available in New York? I was able to buy canned rambutans this weekend in Chinatown, but find the experience lacking in comparison to the fruit's natural state.

Thanks!

-Greg
