the fresh fruits of our labour...and how to preserve them

Yesterday we went raspbery and strawberry picking and have brought home two large boxes of succulent red berries. Naturally, I'd like to enjoy them as long as possible but it seems that berries have a very short life span once off the bush. Should I/can I freeze them or is this not a good idea? What else can I do to save them?

Also - aside from the usual jam, summer pudding, berry crepes (which we had for breakfast today), pies and tarts, what other uses can people suggest for my bounty?
