Just had an interesting experience in this restaurant in the foggy Daly City 99 Ranch Market plaza. There is this new restaurant that is apparently following a trend (possibly HK if some of those random TVB shows that I glanced have indicated) towards a more... "healthy" experience (ching ching dei as my parents might say). The premise being that you choose some sort of water base (congee or soup) to be at the bottom of the steamer. Overtime based on what you order, the steam drippings will help make the broth at the bottom more flavorful as well.
At any rate, they appear to be started by the nearby Dim Sum King (you can order fried rice and some other items from DSK and eat it with your meal).
We went a little towards the later end (surprisingly they close at 1 am), and unfortunately they ran out of shrimp that day. However, to my delight they actually had razor clams! Haven't seen these delicious clams in the bay area in... well I actually can't recall the last time I've seen them around. Regardless, we grabbed an order of those delicious morsels, ordered some fresh scallops, had a red rock cod, half an order of chicken, vermicelli, winter melon, tofu, and veggies. There are some large tanks of the sea creatures in the small restaurant. They provided a little dipping soy sauce that you can customize with garlic and hot peppers which goes well with most things (tastes like the soy sauce you dip the steamed/boiled prawns).
The neat thing about this place is that the workers come by and essentially set the time for each item. The best thing we had steamed were the scallops, clams, and rock cod. The vermicelli was nice accompaniment with the steamed scallops. The chicken was ... well... like steamed chicken. Rather bland but definitely helped with the congee in the bottom. Vegetables tasted like... steamed vegetables, so nothing out of the ordinary there. And at the end of the meal, the congee was pretty tasty (high seafood taste with a nice dash of chicken).
All in all, the restaurant was pretty neat and tasty if you enjoy steamed items with soy sauce. Note, there are some caveats with this. The restaurant is tiny, steaming each item takes awhile, and there is also a mandatory 15% service charge. Also, reservations are recommended.
