First, I'd like to say 'thanks' to all you chowhounds for helping to make my first months in New York pretty darn delicious. I hope that I'm eventually able to give as much back here as I take.
I've been craving Mexican, California-Mexican, Tex-Mex for a month or so now. I walked by Fresco Tortilla on Lex and 20-something today and was lured in by Eric Asimov's article in the window. I got two items take out: Taco Al Carbon & Chicken Fajita. I made it through the Al Carbon, even with the rubbery beef, the pita-tortilla, and the lackluster hot?sauce. But, in the end, my patience ran out and half of the Fajita ended up in the trash can. (The chicken was that cheap Chinese stirfry strip that has a pressed texture and is impossible to dissect- the fat, skin and meat all somehow become one.)
My questions: are some Frescos better than others? I've seen good reviews on the boards. Do they all use the same ingredients? And is there someplace in the 20's or 30's (I'm in the middle, so I'll go east or west) that makes a decent taco? I've seen the daily taco debates. Really, all I want is some good tortillas, quality meats and a little fresh cilantro. A variety of salsas wouldn't hurt either.
